Today was a day of truly giving back. I believe it was giving back to someone who hasn’t had anything really big ever given to them before!
With this giving, I was also able to find out more about the owner of Rex and Roach, their Dad, I will call him M. M was very open about his long life on the streets and the love for his dogs. He was very excited for this day and had been waiting for some time for the weather to warm up so it could happen. It was his one gift that he asked for when Rex lost his eye earlier in the year. To give Rex a special treat because of what he had had to endure. This gift meant so much to him, that M had even made a new little cardboard sign that he proudly changed while we were there. The sign read “dogs being pampered”, and as the people that knew him passed and asked where Rex was, he proudly pointed to the van behind the garden saying “he’s getting pampered today, and then it’s Roachs’ turn”.
We started out at 11:00 am. Our volunteer, KC, arrived before me to help ensure that the dogs and M were ready and waiting for Raphael from the Aussie Pet Mobile. Rex was first to enter the truck, and boy, you would think he rides in vehicles all the time because he was super excited and eager to jump on in! The groom was long for a senior, as Rex is 10. It took approximately 2 ½ hours, and I was told that there was a whole bucket of fur removed from him. Knots behind the ears were removed, toenails were cut and out came Rex, with a new bandana and fur that glistened in the sun. He seemed to know that he had received special treatment and with a smile on his face, he rested in the shade of the umbrella propped for him on the side of the street.
Then in went Roach. Unfortunately I had to leave before her groom was finished, but her coat is short and I knew the difference wouldn’t be much, other than a shine. I was able to capture a few photos of her inside of the vehicle during her bath. I know she will feel just as good as Rex, and will rest well tonight.
During the day, I spent a few hours sitting in the sun on the side of the street with Roach and our volunteer KC. M felt comfortable enough with us to step away to talk to another new homeless fellow that he had befriended. It was interesting to watch people as they passed us by, most kept walking with minimal eye contact, a few stopped and gave change, and another stopped to tell us a story about her ill boyfriend and how she had just received a little extra money so she wanted to share.
Since this day was about giving, we also treated M to a meal of his choice. Usually we are there to support the pets, but we decided that this was going to be a special day for them all! When I asked M what he wanted to eat, if he could have anything, he thought for quite awhile. All of sudden he jumped up and walked away, this confused me a little, but he returned about 2 minutes later and blurted out, with a happy smile, “banana pancakes….I would like banana pancakes from the cafe down the street.” I then asked, “And what would you like to drink, I can get you anything?”. This time M answered quickly “root beer” ….“no wait, a milkshake!”. With this one I had to smile….this was his perfect meal! Banana pancakes and a milkshake! Something so simple, but something that most likely was a very special treat to him.
When I purchased the pancakes I upgraded and included scrambled eggs, bacon & sausage. M’s eyes lit up when I handed everything over. As he bit into a sausage it looked like he had found a little piece of heaven, and he shared a morsel with Roach (Rex was still being groomed) because it’s only right to share with one of your best friends.
So I will wrap up a wonderful day of giving by saying that the dogs are some of the most beautiful dogs I have ever met. They are calm, well behaved and super loveable. Roach is constantly sharing kisses if you allow and I don’t think I heard them bark even once while I was with them. They love M and it is a love that only a pet and owner have, it is a love and devotion that is mutual, and we are so happy to have been able to offer them this amazing gift thanks to the generosity of our followers. So as you all read this, please also share in this special gift of giving, as it is only because of all of you that we are able to do what we do. It is with your every donation, like or share of our page and we hope you are enjoying our journey as much as we are!
As M likes to say … Dog Bless You! <3
